Lesson fees
There are many part-time English teachers all over Japan who only teach in their free time after school or after work. The Lesson fees for private English lessons can vary from
¥1000~¥5000 per hour based on the experience and abilities of the teacher. If you are a native English speaker or have native-level English skills you should be able to make an average of
¥3000 per hour, even if you are not a trained teacher.
Time
Freelance English teaching in Japan does not really take that much of your time. Specially if you are a native-level speaker of the language, you would not need much time preparing for the classes. This will become even easier for you if you are an experienced teacher with lots of teaching material.
The class itself only takes
1~2 hours per session and each student normally takes
1~3 classes every week, so that is 6 hours a week. Furthermore, you get to choose which hours or days of the week you would want to teach. So even if you are a stuedent or have a permanent job, teaching English will not interfere with your main occupation.
Place
The lessons normally take place in
coffeeshops or restaurants which are located at a conveinient location for both the teacher and the student. Teachers of Pittari-sensei get to choose which areas they prefer to teach by choosing a city or a train station. The lesson's also can take place at
the teacher's or the student's home.
Normally, the transportation expenses are on the teacher, so it is better to choose train stations and areas which are close to your home. However, you can negotiate with the student if you think the transportation fees are too high and you need for the student to cover them or move the classes into a more accessible location.
Should I be able to speak Japanese?
This is not a requirement at all. In fact, most of our teachers are not fluent in Japanese. There are students who are actively asking the teachers to speak only in English during the class so that they can learn faster. And also, maybe you will get to learn a thing or two about the Japanese language from your students!
Do I have to be a native speaker to teach English?
No. Non-native speakers of English are also welcome provided they have the neccessary skills to teach an elementary or intermediate student. Sometimes, it is good for the student to learn from a teacher who had to learn English as a second language. You can use you own experiences and techniques from learning English to teach and advise the Japanese students.
We leave this up to you, so if you think you can teach English, you are most welcome to register at the website, but be warned that if many students are not satisfied with your teaching skills, your overall evaluation in the site will go down and you will receive less and less students.
